The era of HUAC and McCarthy . . . ponder the following questions and add a comment(with some in-depth explanation!) that addresses at least two:
1) Should people be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations (aka, "friends") from 10 or more years ago?
2) Would you rat out your friends to keep yourself from getting into trouble?
3) Are you now, or have you ever been, a communist (look it up if your confused on what a communist/communism might be)?
4) Was McCarthy a patriot or a villain?
5) Was"Declaration of Conscience" an appropriate response to McCarthyism? Why?
5) Was"Declaration of Conscience" an appropriate response to McCarthyism? Why?
Villain, is the accurate title for a man like him, he accused high ranking political officials of being communist so he could bring hysteria to our country. I personally see McCarthy as a bit of a national villain I think that it is unjust to do anything and everything possible to hunt down any "communist" and expel them from politics. Although I've been told as a child to rat anyone out if it's for my own good, I wouldn't. Just like the ending of the movie that was shown to us today he stood his ground and only answered questions about him keeping his friends and family safe since what they've done was not a crime in my opinion, because everybody has the right to freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom of assembly.
ReplyDelete5.) Declaration of Conscience was an appropriate response to McCarthyism because it stated that an American citizen had the right to express themselves despite unpopular ideas, such as communism. Additionally, the declaration assets that a citizen has the right to criticize, protest, and have independent thought and should never be restricted.
ReplyDelete4.) McCarthy was a villain who only accused his opposition or those who did not agree with him as communist. Once accused the defendant was not innocent until proven guilty, instead he was already guilty and had to prove his innocence. To add McCarthy inserted hysteria and chaos into America in the mid 19002 with his blacklist.
People should not be held accountable for their words, actions, or personal affiliations from ten years ago. Considering that most of my friends were about 6 or 7 years old ten years ago, I acknowledge the fact that they have matured and see the world as a different place. So, I don’t criticize them for their previous decisions because they were not informed about everything around them. The same goes for everyone else. A decade is a long time for someone to experience life changing events or to gain knowledge that affects their way of reasoning.
ReplyDeleteMcCarthy is a villain in my opinion; however, while reading McCarthy’s speech, I understood why many followed him. He was very persuasive and knew how to relate to the average American. At that time, there was friction between the minority groups and the wealthy since the wealthy were inundated by money while minorities were struggling with discrimination. McCarthy took the side of the common people in his speech, stating, “It has not been the less fortunate or members of minority groups who have been traitorous to this Nation, but rather those who have had all the benefits that the wealthiest Nation on earth has had to offer…”. We still can’t forget that McCarthy was the leader of the second Red Scare which accused Americans of being a communist or affiliated with communism and punished them harshly. Their reputations were ruined and were unable to hold a job. The trials were by accusation instead of by trial and the American people were ripped of their freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Their rights were violated during this time and McCarthy was a supporter who accused people without justification or enough evidence. He also stated that he had a list with the names of 205 communist supporters within the government but it was a lie.
The “Declaration of Conscience” was an appropriate response to McCarthyism. It addresses issues with the persecutions again American citizens. Senator Smith states that being tried as a communist is a violation “the principals of Americanism.” She uses the Constitution as evidence. McCarthy was the villain who violated American’s rights. The senator speaks as a part of the American government. She makes it clear that she cannot support their decision to place citizens on trial for their beliefs. “The exercise of these rights should not cost one single American citizen his reputation or his right to a livelihood nor should he be in danger of losing his reputation or livelihood…”
ReplyDelete2) I would never rat out my friends Unless they are "fake friends", then it's okay to rat on them but if they're your mains, then no. Friends are suppose to trust each other and be there for each other no matter what. Real fiends are your ride or die, they either take the blame or you guys aren't real fiends. During McCarthyism, those who ratted their friends out were not really trust worthy nor loyal to their friends. Friends are suppose to have each other's back and not throw them under the bus. At that time, they might have been scared because they were being accused of something that could get them into deep trouble so they played it safe and turned the game into every man for himself. A true friend would have done whatever means necessary to keep his or her friends out of trouble. Yes some people pointed others out but a true friend who knew the possible outcome of being "guilty" would take the punishment for themselves and save their friends.
ReplyDelete5) "Declaration of conscience" was an appropriate response to McCarthyism. It demonstrated how the government was violating human rights. The document provides evidence in which supports the violation of ones rights. For example, "I think that it is high time that we remembered that we have sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution. I think that it is high time that we remembered; that the Constitution, as amended, speaks not only of the freedom of speech but also of trial by jury instead of trial by accusation.", explains just how McCarthyism went against the people instead of for the people. Many were accused of being communist and were punished for it but it is their human right to believe in what they want. As the Government, they should be protecting our rights, not ignoring them and doing what they want. "Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism --
The right to criticize;
The right to hold unpopular beliefs;
The right to protest;
The right of independent thought." As those of higher authority, they should be using their power and knowledge for the good of the people, not to be against them.
I would not accuse my friend nor rat them out for being communist in order to keep myself from getting into trouble. I will not let them be punished because that was their religion. However, I would have put a stop to it if they were like Hitler who believed in creating a utopian society by eliminating the Jew. I am not now or nor have I ever been a member of the communist party concealed or otherwise, I have never been a supporter of that part, it's candidates, or offices. I have never in public or private hosted or been to a communist meeting. "Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism- right to criticize...hold unpopular beliefs...to protest...[and] of independent thought." McCarthism and his followers are hypocrites and are promoting hypocrisy because they are violating the constitution. Who knows McCarthy himself could have been a communist in disguise. He was a villain who cried wolf getting many innocent people incarcerated and shattering their reputations. The "Declaration of Conscience" is an appropriate response to McCarthism because it revealed the scandal for what it really was a bunch of bs.
ReplyDelete1.Honestly I don't think people should be countable for their actions from 10 years ago. I think over time we come across new ideas and develop new identities as people, much like our country we change and develop. This topic is no different, communism was a big deal at the time, but just because we attended one meeting or heard one communist speaker years ago doesn't mean out ideal on thus topic hasn't changed. Due to peoples past they are now having their rights violated and thrown aside for just being accused of having a certain ideal.
ReplyDelete2. I ain't no rat, da heck you think I am. In all seriousness no I wouldn't tell on a friend to keep myself out of trouble. Especially if it meant ruining their lives and cursing them to exile from society. So no I wouldn't do that to a friend, if you would are they really your friend? you really need to re-think your meaning of "friend" if you would turn them is ever so easily just to save yourself.
1) People should not be held accountable for their words, actions or personal associations from 10 years ago. Their is no valid reason to bring up the past if the person has changed for the better. The only reason to bring it up is to prove someone guilty if that person has a long history of mischief. But even then, evidence that far back would not even be needed because if that person had a history, there would most likely be recent evidence. All of the things that happened in the past are done with and the present needs to be focused on, which is something that was unfair in McCarthy's system because it made most come off as evil.
ReplyDelete2) I am not, nor have I ever been a communist, however I do think that it is a great idea, just not carried out well. Communism sounds great on paper, but it is impossible for it to be carried out efficiently because there will always be greed and the hunger for power in the world. I mean being paid by ability and needs doesn't sound too bad right? To me, it does not sound too far from where we are at in America, but it is so far. Instead of ability, most people are paid by "experience" or years put in, does not mean they are good at their job. People can always fake what they need. Once again, I am not a communist, and that is only because I am selfish and want to set myself apart from everyone else.
It depnds on the situation if a person doesen't learn from their mistakes in the pass they will continue to make bad decisons in life. For instance if you were tought not knowing your rights from youre wrongs you usually end up not getting punished for it until someday you'll end up in jail. Where you can really reflect on all the bad choices and come to a conclusion that what they been doing was wrong. I read a article about a guy who would rob houses for a living and the police could never catch him for years. Until one day he finally got coought and the police asked him with all his talent of being elusive and covering up his tracks why he put it to bad use.He said because thats all he knew how to do.The man lived in poverty most of his young life and from there thats where his skill was being devolped. stealling without fear off being cought and no remorse for the owners. The Declarition of Conscience was totally appropraite in response to McCarthyism becouse it she clearly pointed out that the American people had the right to freely choose as they will as the constition infers it even if the US goverment disagrees or scared
ReplyDelete2) The trust and loyalty of a friend could be considered something sacred. The break of that trust could possibly lead to loosing your friend. Ratting on people isn't in my nature, and I recognize that there are great friends in my life that are worth keeping.
ReplyDelete4) Violating constitutional rights? Tearing apart families? Making false generalizations? McCarthy's methods we're not justified nor fair. As an American citizen we are entitled to the same rights as every other human in the nation. McCarthy's actions could determine him as a villain for not demonstrating signs of humanity within him.
1) Personally for me I don't have an opinion on the matter because i differ on yes or no based on whats being held against you. However In today's society people are held or put on the spot for things they did 15, 20 years from now. If someone is out to discredit you they will look from the moment you are born to the breathes your taking at this moment for somthing of interest they can use. So if people are willing to do it to each other then whats gonna stop the government from doing the same.
ReplyDelete3) no I am not or have I ever been a communist. Communism is the advanced form of socialism which many know fail. The idea of everyone being the same does not strick interest in me because what if everyone is poor, we're all the same no matter. In situation of communism there is always gonna be corruption in the idea itself because what happens if the government owns all the businesses, they own the people as well. If the governments owns the newspapers they're not gonna allow people to speak out against the government in the newspaper. This eliminates the ability of freedom in speech. This event happens more and more till where the government controls every aspect of your life and for me as an American that doesn't sound appealing.
1.) i dont think a person should be held accountable for an action from 10 years ago. What occured in the past should stay in the past. Our country has improved and created change im hopes of becoming only better. It has created a great identity which is why trying to resolve problems from the past seems unecessary. Pur country exceeded with those complictions why try to touch in what already past 2.) I would never throw my friend under the buss for being communist in order to get myself out of trouble knowing that they will receive negative outcomes after. Apparently, if one was capable of doing that they do no recognize the definition of a true friend. I will not allow them to be punished for a personal belief they thought. During the McCarthyism, people were ratted out by their own friends in order to save themselves and earn a reward Which seems to be absoulutely fake and unfaithful.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that people should be be fully held accountable for their words, action, or personal associations from ten years ago. People are constantly growing and learning so it is possible that their beliefs and actions have changed and are in contrast with those form ten years ago. I do however think that looking at ones actions from ten years ago is important to see if the person has changed or not. Not all people do change and so looking at the persons actions from years ago can give you perspective or insight on the person so you can better deal with him in the present.
ReplyDeleteuld I rat out a friend to keep myself from getting in trouble, well yes and no. If my family or people I care about would be hurt if I did not rat out a friend, then yes I would for the well being of my family, and I hope everyone would do the same to protect your loved ones. If one of your loved ones wa the person you were going to rat out, then I wouldn't know what would be the right choice, so maybe. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't rat out a friend, if it's not important.
1) No, I believe that people should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, nor personal associations from 10 or more years ago. The McCarthy system should have really taken this into consideration as they made most look like extremely bad people due to their past wrong doings. A lot can happen in such a time frame. One person can change of opinion, behavior, and acquaintances in as short as a matter of seconds. No one should be judged based on past faults as everyone should be given a right to redeem themselves. However, they can be put into consideration if the same faults have been occurring in the recent time. It can be used as a source of background information, but not as evidence to hold one accountable.
ReplyDelete2) Yes, I would rat out my friends. Unless there is a contract with my very signature stating that I hereby agree to say nothing of it, I will most definitely proceed in the ratting out of a friend. Yes, I understand that it may sound heartless or "fake," but it is the truth. For example, if a friend of mine was accused of committing murder and I am held as a suspect because I was present in the event or that friend confessed to me, I will most definitely rat them out. I refuse to go to jail just to save my friend from trouble. It is their fault for being irresponsible. As the Declaration of Conscience states, "The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs;" I obviously hold an unpopular belief (ratting a friend out) but I still speak my mind because it is my right as an American and I cannot be held guilty nor accountable for it.
1) I do not believe people should be held accountable for something they have said 10 years ago. I say this especially since many people mature and learn as they grow up. We should not judge someone based off what they said long ago while not taking into consideration that they changed. It should be taken into consideration that people learn as they grow up and bringing up their past wont prove anything. Their experiences long ago helped shape the person they are today.
ReplyDelete2) In all honesty, I would rat out my friend if it meant keeping me safe and out of trouble. The meaning of life is the pursuit of happiness and I know for a fact i will not be happy being imprisoned. As sad as this may seem I do what makes me happy and will without a doubt turn someone over to get that happiness. In addition, if my friend has done something wrong I will not feel comfortable keeping it a secret. They should face the consequences of their actions by doing their time in jail.
1.People should not be held accountable today for words, actions, and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. People make mistakes and eventually learn from them, making them grow wiser and more responsible. Over time, people change and most of the time is for the better. There shouldn't be any reason to bring up a person's past because those things are done and should be forgotten. Their main focus should only be the present and the future.
ReplyDelete2.I would only rat out a friend to keep myself out of trouble if the situation is something extremely serious. If it is something of less importance then I wouldn't mind ratting them out because I wouldn't take the blame for something I didn't do. It was admiring to see how in the movie clip we saw in class, the man didn't not give in to the accusations that were against him. He maintained himself loyal to his friends and denied to speak about them. If I would have been under those circumstances there is a ninety nine chance I would have given in.
1- People should not be accountable for their words, actions and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. We all make mistakes and what ever we decide to do at a certain time of our lives is based on the situation we are in. We all grow as people and something done 10 years ago should not hold us back. We're all very picky at times and change our minds every hour. Maybe what you decided on made sense at the time for example, when President Bush send troops to war after the 9/11 attacks to protect America from further terrorism. He wanted to protect America and show we are a nation of power, but in time it was just a waste and endless war. President Bush should not be accounted for that, he made that decision years ago with good in mind. No one should be accounted for their words, actions and personal associations from 10 or more years ago because the circumstances affect our judgment, what we do and what we say at the time.
ReplyDelete3-I am not now, or have ever been a communist. I've lived in both Mexico and the United States for more than 5 years and I am a believer of democracy. Communist countries give all the power to their government believing they will do what is best for the nation, but they really don't. In a communist country everyone is equal and there is no room for overachievers. The government controls all markets and places. I don't like that, people should be able to achieve higher and not all be equal. Therefore, I am not now or have ever been a communist. I simply don't share their view in life.
3)"Communism (from Latin communis – common, universal) is a socioeconomic system structured upon the common ownership of the means of production and characterized by the absence of social classes, money, and the state; as well as a social, political and economic ideology and movement that aims to establish this social ..." By definition I find it easier to say that I have been a communist. Not in the sense of wanting to have complete control over something as important as the state more towards a self-communist. With that I take control of the life around me such as money, food production. With a centrally governed sustainability of whole economy I have been in that position when it comes controlling the life around me.
ReplyDelete4) McCarthy at the time was considered to be a patriot in bringing in people who followed the ways or had any connection to communism. He did so only because he knew of its outcome if it happened in the United States for he saw what the Soviet Union was doing as well as China. He committed people only to contain the problem, which at the time was patriotic. However, in this day and age the fact they we live in a mixed economy where government plays limited roles in controlling people with certain beliefs would make him the villian. With that said all rights of the people were violated. I mean what happened to freedom of expression. Which is why at the time McCarthy was alive he was a patriot of sorts. But in this day and age I would consider him a villain for committing people to prison for expressing their beliefs.
1)
ReplyDeleteI don't believe people should be held accountable for action from ten years ago. Well in this case specifically, because some people would not say that they are affiliated with Communism presently. However, they might have been associated with the group back then it should not affect their life later. It should not reflect what type of person they are from the past. People can change therefore it is not morally right. The only exception I would say are criminals.
2)
I would most likely "rat out" my friend. I wouldn't be proud of it, but I would not be foolish enough to take the fall for someone else's actions. I will however take responsibility for my own actions. Some might argue that it is not right to put your friends under the bus however it isn't wise to throw yourself instead, this is mainly why I would because sometimes it is necessary.
1) I believe that people shouldn't be held accountable for their words, actions, and personal associations from 10 years ago. Everyone makes mistakes, although some may not learn from them that doesn't make everyone else seem as they are making the same decisions. Eventually as time goes on people will change. The decisions they made at the time depending the situation will not be the same as the decisions they will make 10 years from now. There comes a time where someone will tell you to focus on the future because the past is the past there is no going back to it, so why will someone be judged by what they did in the past if the decisions they are making now are from learning from their mistakes and for their own good.
ReplyDelete2) I personally wouldn't rat out on a friend. If what they did was something really bad or whatever it may be then I think they should be responsible enough to take over their own actions. If they were a true friend, then they should have enough guts to confess what they did than to watch someone else be affected by their actions, it will be on their conscious if they didn't do anything about it and watch someone else get hurt. I know if I did something I would take responsibility for my actions.
1) I believe that people should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, or personal associations from 10 or more years ago because people could have changed overtime and realize that their mistakes were a bad choice.
ReplyDelete2) I would rat out my friend to keep myself from getting into trouble because if they were actually my friend, they wouldn't bring me into their trouble and to a point where I could get in the same trouble also.
1. People shouldn't be held accountable go
ReplyDeleteFor their words actions and personal association from 10 years ag. People make mistakes and change their opinion .Therefore is kit right to do such a thing
2. I would rat a friends out of it meant getting myself out of trouble because I'm not bout to suffer the consequences of someone else's fault even if they are my friend.
I agree that people should not be accountable for words or things they said 10 years ago. We all have the right to say what we want when ever we want.
DeleteI believe that people shouldn't be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations that was form more than 10 years ago because it was over 10 years ago. If you were to dwell on the past then there would be no reason to move forward. Plus the events were more that ten years ago and if their words, actions, and the people they associated with were bad then they could have learned from their mistakes. I would rat out my friends if it were to keep me out of trouble because why would they put me in that position in the first place. It would be there problem since they are the ones that were up to no good. They wouldn't be true friends if they were to drag me down with them if they were and trouble for doing something they weren't supposed to do.
ReplyDelete1. i believe that people should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations from ten years or more ago. At that time the reasons they would have done something that is now being held against them was maybe the right thing for them then. people change of perspectives and ideas so much that it is not fair to want to punish someone due to their personal thoughts and actions from the past. this lesson only teaches people to be more mature and grow up from their past actions to be better. Everyone makes mistakes especially when they do not think about the future or even think about getting in trouble for their words and actions. people should not be accountable for something they said or did ten years ago.
ReplyDelete2. if it was a situation dealing with something extremely serious such as someone's life i would must definitely rat out a friend. If the situation was not so bad i would not rat a friend out i would just mind my own business and let the people investigate whatever they want to find out somewhere else. For example, on the clip we watched in the class the man kept quite which was very inspiring to see how loyal someone can be to a friend in order to keep them safe. i would only rat out a friend if it had something to do with someone's life other than that i don't think i would.
2. I honestly wouldn't be able to answer that. It all depends if the friend is a real friend or fake friend. Definitely if they were a fake friend I'd probably rat them out because I wouldn't want to take the blame for some like them. But then again a true friend wouldn't let you take the blame for something you never did. If they are a good friend of mine sure I'll take the blame.
Delete1. I believe people shouldn't beheld accountable today for their words actions and personal associations from ten or more years ago. People could of changed overtime and realize the mistakes they have done.
1)No, people should not be held accountable for something that happened 10 years ago. Though an exception would be if they committed a serious crime, because breaking the law is not something that can be easily forgiven, if it was minor like stealing a piece of candy from the convenience store then I believe it should be forgiven. People change over time and grow they learn that some of their past actions should not be repeated, and become better people.
ReplyDelete2)I would never rat out my friends to get out of trouble. Friendship is a bond that is created over time and can not be easily broken just to get off easy for something you did. If I consider someone my friend then it is someone that I would take the fall for, because I know that there are always more sides to a story, and their side would be the most important to me. So no I would never rat out one of my friends to keep myself from getting in trouble.
(I totally forgot about this blog, sorry Mrs. Ramirez. 😔)
ReplyDelete1) In the course of a person's life, they go through many experiences, make several mistakes, and learn multiple lessons. This is why I don't believe that people should be held accountable for their words, actions, or personal associations from ten years ago. The person you are now is completely different than the person you were ten years ago. Ten years ago, I was 6 and probably said "hurted" instead of hurt, thought the moon was a cookie and wondered why it followed my car around, played with bratz dolls, and was friends with people who liked kidz bop. I would never want to be held accountable for any of those things today because I am obviously a little more mature now.
2) This is a very difficult question to answer because my answer can vary depending upon the situation. However, I can say that if I was in David Merrill's position, I would've done exactly what he did... or if I was in a convicted drug dealer's position and would get less time if I ratted out other drug dealers, I would not because that would mean losing my dignity (however, this could change if I was ACTUALLY in this position, I am a huge wimp, haha).
3) Yup, total communist. You caught me RED handed. Haha.
No, just kidding communism is a horrible system. DOWN WITH COMMUNISM!!!!!
I believe that people shouldn't be held accountable for their words, actions, and personal associations from 10 years ago. because people would not say that they are affiliated with Communism but they were part of the group back then it should not affect their life later.People make mistakes and change and you should not be help accountable for the past
ReplyDeleteI would rat out a friend if it meant saving me, because I would not lie for them if would effect me. In certain situations it could be different and maybe then I would not rat them out but if has anything to do with me I would look out for myself instead.
I believe that people today shouldn't be held accountable for their words, actions, or personal associations from 10 years ago. Poeple's opinions, believes, and way of living are constantly changing, and something that you agreed on yestersay, you might disagree on today.
ReplyDeleteI would rat a friend out it it saves me. Survival of the fittest, and more like survival of the smartest. I wouldn't lie to cover them or for them. If what they did was wrong, they must pay for the consequences. Everything you do has a consequence. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad.
McCarthy was a villain. Everything he was doing was wrong in every way. He could have and probably was a communist, and wanted everyone else to cover for his actions.
The Declaration of Conscience is an appropriate response to Mccarthism. It says that people have the free will to express themselves in whatever idea they please.
ReplyDelete1. No, I don't think that someone should be accountable for something they said or did 10 years ago. People should have their own rights to do whatever they feel is right to do. Peoples ideas are their own and they have the right to have their ideas.
2. No, I would not rat out my friend. At this time people lost their right of freedom of speech. They were killed for no reason without evidence. You can only kill someone if you have evidence that, that person is a bad person. When you are friends with someone you share trust and must be a loyal person to them.
2) Normally, I would not rat out my friend(s), I care too much for them to see them be punished. However, if it was under circumstances such as a communism trial, I would. My reason for ratting them out is because if I do not rat them out, they, in turn, have the chance to rat me out once they take the stand. My reason basically follows the saying "Eat or be eaten."
ReplyDelete4) I would personally say McCarthy was a mixture of both. He was a patriot in the fact that he was standing up and attempting to protect his country from communism. However, I say he is a villain because he ruined the lives of ordinary people as well as the lives some very famous movie stars of the era.
Depending on the crime someone did around 10 years ago should depict whether or not they are still held accountable. For instance, if they were in some type of drug business or did some sort of theft, but aren't into that lifestyle anymore, they shouldn't be held accountable because what they did, doesn't necessarily make them a bad person. On the other hand, if they committed a murder or other sick crimes (pedophilia, rape, molestation, ANIMAL ABUSE, etc.) then they should be held accountable, probably not so far as prison but probably mental help because they are more than likely sick in the head. I know a couple people who shouldn't be accountable for something from 10 years ago, not necessarily friends, though.
ReplyDeleteConsidering I refuse to lie if I know I am in jeopardy of getting into trouble if I do or the consequences are major, I would more than likely "rat out" my "friends". If they did something wrong it would be on them and I try not get myself involved with troubled people. Their actions led them to trouble and their consequences are theirs alone so regardless they would need to pay the price.
4) Joseph McCarthy could be considered both a patriot and a villain. On one hand, he could be considered a patriot due to his feverish support and constant defense of the United States against it's enemies and traitors. For example, on his speech addressed in Virginia in the year 1950, McCarthy proclaims the immorality of the atheistic communistic world and the need to sweep the "sorry mess of twisted, warped thinkers" out of our nation. On the other hand, certain actions of his may also be considered villainous. McCarthy is challenging the ideal of Americanism: the right to criticize, hold unpopular beliefs, protest and independent thought. It is almost as if he wants to control the way communism is seen through the eyes of an American, which can only be categorized as hypocritical and ironically communistic as well.
ReplyDelete5)
5) The Declaration of Conscience was an appropriate response regarding McCarthyism. It analyzes and addresses the issues that arise following McCarthyism. Senator Smith criticizes Joseph McCarthy and his complete contradiction that goes against the basic ideals of Americanism. She states how he is violating the right of citizens through unjust accusations and not allowing them to exercise their basic freedoms that come with living in America.
ReplyDeleteThere are many view points on whether the person should be accountable for their actions they committed 10 or more years ago. My point of view would be that a person should and should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, or friends. Reason of my choice would be that it would have to depend on the problem that the person committed. I would rat out my friends to keep myself from getting into trouble, because if I didn’t commit the problem, then I shouldn’t have to be the one to suffer the consequences. It is up to them whether or not if they choose to confess. No, I have never been or will never be a communist. I would never have a person choose what is best for me just because they think it is “better” for the people.

3&4) http://youtu.be/nJzV6-wJ3SQ In this video, The Hollywood Blacklist 1947-1960 shows John Howard Lawson and Dalton Trumbo answering the question," Are you now, or have you ever been, a communist? They of course stood up for their constitutional rights. As Ring Lardner Jnr explain about being completely cooperative and answering yes or no to the question if you were a communist or ever have been. He expalins the outcomes of answering yes, which led to the next question to be, who else was? McCarthy is a villian the word McCarthyism is based off his name. His practices were unfair because it was the making of unfair allegations and using unfair investigation techniques.

ReplyDeletePeople should be accountable for the actions and what they say but not with who the associate with that shouldn't make you guilty because people think differently and have different point of view. McCarthy is a villain because that isn't how people should be accused of being guilty. The first amendment defends our freedom of speech and there's nothing that says you can't be associated with people that have a different point of view on there government.
ReplyDelete1) I don't think people should be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. The reason for that is because I believe that the people should be able to do what they want unless it's something bad like murder which is understandable but doing something that every citizen has a right to should not be held accountable. It's like making eating pizza illegal and making everyone who has ever ate pizza before go to jail or having to pay a fine, it's just as ridiculous.
ReplyDelete2) I personally would not rat out my friends to keep myself from getting into trouble because that's who I am. Instead of having a loved one or a close friend get in trouble I'd take the consequences because if I wouldn't I'd look like a bad friend and I'd people would be ashamed of me and me of myself. Not only that but if I can take the fault for something I believe in I sure will take the fault even if I go to jail.
1) I believe that you should not be held accountable for whom your friends were 10 years ago. The reason is that people tend to change over time. We constantly change whom we put our selves around, depending whether a person Is trying to better them selves or just wants to change crowds. For this reason , I believe you should not be accountable for who you hung around with ten years ago.
ReplyDelete2) When it comes to ratting someone out that's something I would not do. I'm a believer in taking responsibility for your own actions. This ties back to my believes in not being accountable for who your friends were 10 years ago because if you are not responsible for them, then you should not be able to decide there future either.
4) McCarthy is a villain because who goes around accusing people of communism when they have no evidence? The Red Scare was a time when if you were accused of being a communist then that's what you were and there was no changing anyone's mind about it. People supposedly got a "trial" but it was highly unfair. They were asked questions and were then accused of lying and thrown into prison. It was basically a complete mess and McCarthy only blew it into something way bigger than it actually was. It was because of that and along with his accusations that I believe he was just a plain out villain.
ReplyDelete5) Of course the "Declaration of Conscience" was an appropriate response to McCarthyism. How is it not? She is responding to all the unfairness that is occurring. There is an actual war occurring outside the doors of America but everyone is too focused on communism "infecting" American citizens. They're creating a war within America, an unnecessary one. We as citizens should be able to give our opinion on anything and not feel threatened or scared if we do. That is how she is correct and it's a great response because it's pointing out everything that is irrational when it comes to McCarthyism.
1.) I believe one should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, or personal associations from 10 or more years ago. People change over time and realize what they did 10 or more years ago were mistakes that they wouldn't today. Past mistakes are what develop humans into the best version of themselves. The past shouldn't be brought up in the present because it effects the future of that person.
ReplyDelete2.) I would never rat out a friend to keep myself from getting in trouble. Ratting out a friend would only make my situation even worse. Even though I would already be in a bad position, I wouldn't want to transfer this position to a close friend and lose trust in them.
1.) It would go both ways for being held accountable today for your words, actions, or personal associations from 10 or more years ago. I can't specifically say yes or no because it would just depend what you're being held accountable for. In this case I don't think it should be held against you, we can all change our perspectives and opinions. If you were a communism before and you've changed I believe it shouldn't be held against you, because people have the right to change their minds.
ReplyDelete2.) I would never rat a friend out just to keep myself out of trouble. Even if it's something really bad. I would take full responsibility for my actions. Ratting a friend out will just make matters worst and make you untrustworthy.
2) I myself would never rat out my friend(s) in order to keep myself out of trouble. I don't do that to friends well, because their my friends and I don't consider just anyone my friend. I plan to look out for my friends and I know they would do the same for me.
ReplyDelete1) No one should be accountable for their actions or words from 10 years ago. First, the person might had had some type of intervention and not be the same. Second, it has been so long that the actions or words should be let go and forgotten. And third, every person would eventually own up to their actions and words and try to justify them if it is needed. Every person would at least try to right their wrongs.

DeleteI believe now a days people should not be held accountable for there words, actions, and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. People may have made mistakes but that's just how life is, you learn from them. Some even make you a better person and show you your true destiny and why that happened. Our mistakes make us who we are, and we could either ignore them or try to understand what it is we need to fix to make out lives worth living.
ReplyDeleteI would never rat out my friends to keep myself from getting into trouble because it would only make the situation worse for them and me. Putting the situation on my friend would only jeopardize our friendship and the good relationship I have with them.
1)I believe that people should not be held accountable for their words, actions, and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. As one grows older they start learning from their past mistakes and actions. That's part of being human. Depending on the situation you try to make the best decision possible. It might not always be right one.
ReplyDelete2)A friend in which I consider to be someone who is honest, trustworthy, and trustful. No would not rat out one of my friends to keep me from getting in trouble. In other words, I know that for a fact that mr friend wouldn't rat on me if he/she was in my position. Now if I hardly know the person and wants me to consider him/her as a friend then I might rat he/she out. For example, there was a clip I saw in class that a man wouldn't give out his friends names to the judge. The man knew the consequences if he didn't give out their names.
No I am not and i will never be communist. I strongly believe in democracy and "rule by the people". If I knew anyone that was communist i would not accuse him because it is a violation of a person's rights. I would never think of accusing a friend, just in the same way I am pretty sure a friend would not accuse me.
ReplyDeleteNo, people should not be held accountable for their past especial more than 10 years ago. I would not rat out my friends to keep myself from getting in trouble since if I know I'm innocent or guilty I will take whatever accusation they may throw. No I have never been a communist. McCarthy is a villain since his actions are not justified. The declaration of conscience was an appropriate response to McCarthyism cuz they held the basic principles of Americans, the right to criticize, the right to hold unpopular beliefs, the right to protest, and the right of independent thought.
ReplyDeleteI think that no one should be held accountable for their actions, words, or personal associations from 10 years ago. People make mistakes and can either learn from it or not. Many people can be different now. They either have a different mind set or have forgotten about what has happened in the past. You can't judge someone off something that happened 10 years ago, unless they are still the same. I believe that people will try and make up for their mistakes and do something for the better.
ReplyDeleteI would not rat out any of my friends in order to keep myself from trouble. I won't rat out a friend for something they have done, especially if I am not involved I won't say anything. Ratting a friend out will just make them see what kind of person you are and it will also cause many problems that you will not be happy with.
1) No, I strongly disagree with the fact that people should be prosecuted for their words, action, or their personal associations especially after ten years. Given the fact that no one in this world is perfect, we all make mistakes. Who is to say that in ten years your no different? As humans we all learn from our mistakes. They deserve the right to fix they're mistakes. Afterall the past is the past.
ReplyDelete2) First of all it depends on the situations and the type of friends you surround yourself by. In my case, it depends if its a so call "fake friend" I would not hesitate to rat him out. When it comes to a "true friend" I would realize that if I rat him out he would be going throuh what im going through at the moment. Especially if I was being accused of being a communist. They wouldnt just ruin my life they would ruin all my "true friends" if i decided to rat them out.
2) In all my life time, i had made mistakes. I would never rat to my friends to just get out of trouble. In the short video we watched in class, is an example of how i would react if i was told a question about a close friend. He insisted on asking questions about himself and didn't want anything to do with any questions of his friends. He is an example of a trustworthy person that you can trust all your life.
ReplyDelete4) McCarthy should be considered a villain for what he did. He violated so many constitutional rights. McCarthy used the fear of Communism to justify his violation of Constitutional rights. He lied about communist infiltrations in the U.S government and army, destroying the lives of innocent people.

2) Ratting out your friends in order to save yourself is not only cowardly but disgraceful If a person is moral, just, and brave they will acknowledge that a true friend is worth protecting. A real friend would not throw you under the bus to save themselves. Therefore, you must reflect upon yourself and wonder what kind of friend you truly are.
ReplyDelete4) McCarthy embodied the character of a villain. He broke the constitution and caused nationwide hysteria. He made over generalizations and with his blacklist accused many of being communists. Many would argue that he was patriotic because of his efforts to protect his nation from communism. Yet, his practices were unjust and unfair. Every citizen in the U.S. should be entitled to a fair trial and with McCarthy you were not given this basic right.
People are accountable for the actions they commit with whomever even if it is in their past. Actions define individuals and they shall always predict their future. Words however should not be accounted for ten or more years later. In the rush or rage of a moment, a person may blurt or reply something they do not mean. People may even state beliefs that are not true. In the time of the Cold War, Americans may have stated they believed a different ideology out of rage from the violation of Constitutional rights they felt the government had violated. Their actions of that time should be accounted for as physical evidence if a persecution was enacted by the government, but the words of a person should not violate their jury by trial instead of accusation. Henceforward, actions you commit are accounted for yourself, as an a single individual. If I were punished for the actions I committed, and the only way to stay out of trouble was to name my accomplices i.e friends, I would not name them. I must take the responsibility of telling the truth and bringing myself to justice. I would not "rat" my friends out to avoid getting in trouble. I know the right thing to do would to come forward with the truth if I was guilty, only for my account. My friends may or may not come forward but I would not be the person to force them into their consequences.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I believe there is a line between actions and words when answering "Should people be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations (aka, "friends") from 10 or more years ago?" I understand word play and how in the 20th century, during the Cold War, there rose a fear amongst freedom of speech. I understand how being present somewhere does not directly mean you were the leader nor where responsible of the event. I understand how being part of an association, group, party, etc., does not mean you abide by and value all beliefs. Inclusively, I understand Senator Margaret Chase Smith's claim in "Declaration of Conscience” Speech, "The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs; The right to protest; The right of independent thought. The exercise of these rights should not cost one single American citizen his reputation or his right to a livelihood nor should he be in danger of losing his reputation or livelihood merely because he happens to know some one who holds unpopular beliefs. Who of us doesn't? Otherwise none of us could call our souls our own. Otherwise thought control would have set in." However, within this there is only the support of words and thoughts. Words can be used in any way but it is actions which hold you responsible. If a man believed a 16 year old girl was attractive it is his own opinion and if he voices it, it is still his own opinion; however, if he acted on his opinion then it would be a reasonable cause for punishment. On the same account, the statement of responsibility for actions, words or associations lingers on a question of "what was it?" was it an action that is a justification for punishment or was it the exercise to freedom of belief and speech? One may say, people have changed over a matter of time but actions should be punished (because at the end of the day they did it it) taking into account it's damage and justification of the crime, however words should not because everyone has their own opinion and should be allowed to voice them (Of course with the exception of racism, bullying or any way of diminishing a person).
1) I personally believe that it is unjust for an individual to be held accountable for their words, actions, or friends from ten or more years ago. Regardless of what you what might have believed or stood for before, it dies not define who you are now. It was wrong for individuals to be trialed for being alleged communists because of things they might have done in the past. However, this was a common practice during the era of HUAC. As a result, many individuals were punished regardless of being communists or not.
ReplyDelete2) Due to the communist trials of the era of HUAC, some individuals would rat out their friends to save their own skin. During many of the trials victims were asked to name all those involved in what was asumed to be communist practices. Some victims gave in to the pressure as a mean to seek forgiveness while others remained loyal. Personally ratting out your friends seems to be the worst a person could do. Why add fuel to the fire? It seems pointless to hold anyone else accountable and condemn others towards their potential death.
I'm still not sure if I am communist, but once I became aware of the communist ideals being reflected during WW2 in the United States, in theory, communism does not sound too bad. In a way, a communist country would seem like a utopian society, where ultimately all resources are shared equally based on need, property is all owned collectively, there is no state, and work is done based on passion rather than economic need. Communism would allow the lower class who have long struggled to overcome economic burdens and have a try at the wealthy, American lifestyle, everyone seeks out to receive. In reality, WW2 did undertake communism despite its claims to "defend democracy," and during this era, unemployment was almost completely diminished, resources were shared, women were able to work, which ultimately created a healthy, joyful environment in the United States.,
ReplyDeleteAs actions, words, and personal associations, are completely different from each other, people should not be given the same punishment for complete different associations of each other. I would understand if one would be held accountable for acting in the name of communism, but discussing communism annd/or having a personal relationship with a supposed communist should not result in punishment, especially 10 years later after the occurrence. Significantly, being held accountable for a relationship and free speech, is a complete violation of an American's 1st amendment.
1) Should people be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations (aka, "friends") from 10 or more years ago?
ReplyDeletePeople should not be held accountable today for their words, actions, and personal associations from 10 or more years ago. To bring up, or even mention past activities done by someone creates a chain for that said individual for their inability to be able to finally move on and be free from associations of the past. Everyone deserves a second chance. If we are not provided for a second chance at freedom, then will we ever be free? Are we even free?
2) Would you rat out your friends to keep yourself from getting into trouble?
Humankind are social creatures that crave companionship amongst others. We form bonds, connections to serve and communicate with other individuals. As a result of this, loyalty and dedication is conserved and established along with commitment with the said beings. Provided that these "friends" proved to be actual friends, ones who would remain loyal and never sever the connection that created such a relationship, and not expose their friends in order to save themselves, then I'd do the same. To provide such a selfless task for others is the ultimate example of a loyal friend, one who would care, one who would be there when wanted, or even needed. No, I would not, only and only if I trusted them, because trust is an important crucial component of a foundation of a friendship.
During World War II, German soldiers looked inside homes of invaded countries for the Jewish population that remained hidden inside. The Gestapo questioned everyone and made sure they left no Jew behind. Some individuals of Jewish descent tried to run away or even hide from the horrible fate that awaited them. Those who were fortunate enough to stay behind after city inspections hid in friends' homes. These friends, whom they trusted with their lives, provided them a safe haven from a terrible consequence. Those that remained loyal to their Jewish friends became selfless knowing that they could've gone to jail, concentration camps, or even put to death. Choosing to help their friends instead of themselves is a real friend.
1) I believe people should not be held accountable for their actions based on who they associated with or what they did 10 years ago. It isnt fair that someone, who could have had a change in personality or character 10 years later, is judged for what they did in the past. People could have had a change of heart depending on what they have been through in their lives.
ReplyDelete2) i believe that ratting friends out is acceptable only when you are at risk of getting into serious trouble, such as jail time. Also in cases where you are at risk of gettig into trouble for something you were not part in. Ratting friends out when you are not at risk of serious punishment is not friend-like and shows the true loyalty you have for friends whom may be very loyal towards you.

1) They should be aware of their actions as a reminder of what they should change in their character , or as well as what part of them should remain the same .
2) I would , their actions aren't mine by now they should keep in mind what's good and bad for them . Just like they should be aware of trying to drag a friend with them for their mistakes .
3) Although communism was once frowned upon , I believe I was a communism . Generally the idea of equality and such got to me but now if you work enough and get paid by a lot it doesn't mean you are bad you got there by pushing your self .
4)McCarthy was both patriot and a villain . He had a big thing against communism and did what ever in his power (being opportunistic) to keep communism away . Although he ended destroying careers along with him .
5) It seemed to me it was more of a personal matter other than politically viewed . The speech didn't exactly kick McCarthy out right away but at least for years of judging paid off. This speech gave support and criticism for the ending career of McCarthy .
